Believe all the hype you've heard. It is indeed beautiful and lush, and the shining sun might be a character in itself. The acting is superb, and Timothee deserves that nomination, perhaps even the Oscar.
It is more a coming of age story than a love story, though there is romance aplenty. But it didn't follow the gay film trope in which the main character has to come out, etc. He is just in love. I don't know if that has to do with the author of the book being a straight guy or not.
It didn't overwhelm me as Brokeback Mountain did, but it was wonderful in its way. And the father's speech was amazing. And so, alas, youth and young love.
